Introducing the Dreaming and Doing Competency and Profile Test

We are excited to announce the launch of the Dreaming and Doing Competency and Profile Test, a practical tool designed to assess and support children’s connection with nature. This test is part of the Nurturing Nature Intelligence in Schoolchildren project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. Developed by experts in psychology, education, and nature-based learning, the test provides valuable insights into how children engage with nature, both emotionally and practically. It is designed for use by educators, parents, and researchers who seek to understand and strengthen children’s Nature Intelligence (NQ).

Understanding Nature Intelligence in Children

Nature Intelligence (NQ) is a multidimensional concept that reflects a person’s ability to emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually connect with nature. Research shows that a strong bond with nature supports mental well-being, social skills, and environmental responsibility. However, many children today face barriers to developing this connection, such as digital distractions and limited outdoor play. To help address this, we have created two versions of the test:
  1. The Young Child and Nature Test (for ages 5–7) – Completed by an adult (parent, teacher, or caregiver) who observes the child’s behavior.
  2. The Me and Nature Test (for ages 8–12) – A self-assessment where children reflect on their own relationship with nature.
Both tests evaluate six key competencies grouped into two dimensions:
  • Dreaming: Emotional and reflective engagement with nature, including feeling, connecting, and amazement.
  • Doing: Active participation in nature, including practical skills, daring experiences, and acceptance of nature’s challenges.

How the Test Works

The test consists of 18 statements that measure different aspects of a child’s connection to nature. After completing the test, children receive a personalized Nature Intelligence profile, which falls into one of four categories:
  1. Beginner – Low engagement in both dreaming and doing.
  2. Empathizer – Strong emotional connection but less physical interaction with nature.
  3. Engager – Actively participates in nature but may not reflect deeply on it.
  4. Embracer – High engagement in both dreaming and doing, demonstrating a well-rounded connection to nature.
Each child’s results are visualized in a spider web diagram, helping educators and parents understand strengths and areas for growth. This tool can also guide curriculum development and nature-based learning activities tailored to children’s needs.

A Tool for Educators and Parents

The Dreaming and Doing Competency and Profile Test is an open-access resource, making it freely available to schools, families, and researchers. By using this test, educators can create personalized learning experiences that foster deeper connections with nature, helping children develop lifelong appreciation and care for the environment.
